To be fair, the loss of the diamond/iron mine was not because Lombardi exactly screwed up - it was sabotage by the son in law. Even Tia said that once she found out the Lombardis were participating, she’d have to bid significantly higher because they’d do anything to keep iron mines locked down. Only because she overheard what he was going to bid did she lower the amount closer to her original plan.
