Yeah the love = hate thing makes no sense to me.
I think Violet is upset because Maryjun is such a lovely person and is genuinely good hearted - but the fact that she gets all the attention makes it hard for Violet to love her. She feels neglected and probably jealous of Maryjun to some extent? Maybe not jealousy but at least a bit of dislike.
