Given deaths laugh, I think that this life isn't really destined to die.

@LordTrollbias The eleventh. Three more deaths to go, including the final one after which the punishment will be over and his fate will be decided, presumably.

I'm not sure Death's only laughing at the fact he's reincarnated as a tramp. My guess is that perhaps the criminal survived and she's laughing at the irony.

Other than that, I can see how Ijae doesn't give a damn about begin a beggar. He's already died by drowning (considered one of the worst ways to die) and by torture. He's had plenty of pointless deaths, and he's already died of illness. Scrounging for a few days and dying in a kerb will probably teach him a kind of solitude and humiliation that will put in perspective the life that led him to commit suicide, but at this point it kinda falls flat because I'm pretty sure he no longer has the same mindset he used to in his original body. I don't think Death is trying to teach him something about life, either.

I'm not sure what time of the year it is, but if it's late fall, perhaps he'll die of hypothermia in the first snow.

Though he's by no means lived the whole gamut of Korean existence, other than a woman or a very old person, I doubt there's much that will show Ijae a new perspective at this point.

Yeah I agree. Dude's been through so much nothing is really phasing him anymore.
The only thing I can see shaking him at this point is if he gets put in his mom's body but I think Death is saving that for his final life.

With 2 more bullets left I am kind of surprised the Author hasn't reintroduced his Ex in some way. but yeah I can see the criminal surviving the fall which is why Death laughed

My theory is that his final life will be his own(previously to all the things that led him to commit suicide), or maybe his mother's.

5 bucks says his new body is a criminal that got away from his last body's partner, and he's gonna get arrested and sentenced to life in a maximum security prison with 24/7 suicide watch.

Oh, I wonder… he could spill the beans at least once. Up to now he hadn't really bonded with anyone, except for Jisoo, who also died. But in this life, he's finally made a friend. If he can't spill the beans to his mother, why not to Jihoon? That would be at least a way to allay the latter's guilt over it, and to vent a little without having to disguise it as fiction.

The downside is if he does that, the good opinion Jihoon formed of his former partner will dissipate. So to preserve the guy's memory, perhaps Ijae will refrain from doing that.

Oh, silly me, I've thought of another possibility for Death's smirk.

I think Ijae may find out that instead of being thought of as a self-effaced hero by Jihoon and the others, they'll refer to him as a suicidal loony.

I mean, tackling an armed criminal on a rooftop is hardly standard cop procedure. They could have tried running away or taking cover to request reinforcements. A cop has a duty to put their life on the line for the protection of others, but that doesn't mean he should throw away his own life without reason.

So that might be the "lesson" (I'm not sure he's supposed to learn a lesson in each life, as on Death's part this seems just an exercise in sadism) this time round: that just as with his original body, you aren't supposed to die without first giving it your all in order to live.

I bet he's in for a round of shame and bitterness in this life.

Is no one going to think about the possibility that the partner also died? That would be a major reason why Death would laugh. The MC looks so proud of himself for having saved the partner. What better reason is there than the partner also dying? The action that he thought had so much meaning turns out to have been completely pointless, and it's because she IS Death. All is in her control. Maybe the guy fired one last bullet before falling. Maybe an earlier bullet that grazed the MC hit the partner behind.

At the very least, maybe the partner is now a pitiful sack of sadness and reduced to nothingness with the loss of the MC.

The only other possibility that makes good story sense is that the partner was never going to die regardless. However, the only way for that to have worked to "torture" the MC is if she told him. There's no way for him to suffer from that counterfactual knowledge unless she tells him, so that doesn't seem like the answer.

I'm also left feeling underwhelmed by Death not "punishing" the MC for ending his own life. He could've easily talked his way out of it by saying something like he thought he would've lived or how it's part of the job. And now it feels way too late to even explain it; Death doesn't appear until "between" lives; unless he dies really quickly, it seems like the pacing would be massively thrown off for him to go through an entire life again and then he gets told by Death what the punishment is going to be for the previous life. That just wouldn't make sense.

@comeonnow I had thought of that, but my conclusion is that Death is letting him off without the "horrific" punishment because it wasn't deliberate suicide, or at least he had plausible deniability. The bullets only grazed him, and the body tackle might have avoided the parapet. It was a daredevil move and he thought of the possibility of dying, but it was different from hanging himself or jumping off a building. I think Death is satisfied so long as he dies when he'd rather live, in this case. Some of the lives, in which he was miserable and would rather die, she was probably happy just by seeing him suffer.

I doubt the partner died, he was well up to the moment he shouted his name and at that point it was already to late for one more shot to hit him at that angle. That's why I discarded the possibility.

The other possibility your raised is indeed a reason for her to laugh. Which is what made me say earlier that he might choose to tell the guy about the whole reincarnation thing.

Well, let's wait and see.

Thanks for the upload Kendama

Perhaps Death laughed because they weren't suppose to die right there, and that there was an event a couple days down where they were both suppose to die. So him dying earlier would cause his partner to die in a different tone, something like both parents dying and leave the child alone instead of the husband just dying

We'll see in the coming chapters

@Kendama

Regardless of the MC's intentions, he took death as the easy route. It's the main reason he's in this current mess now, and death's main reason for putting him through all this is to show him otherwise that it's anything but 'easy.'

I'm pretty certain the only reason Death seemingly let the MC off was because whatever he's about to experience is going to get that point across on its own. And It'll more than likely have to due with the partner and his family who, like the MC's mother, will certainly be worse off.
