Yeah, while the original ending was realistic in some respects, I think the author didn't deliver on their implied promise. Plus best girl is best girl.

eeeeeh, but Nishino is best Girl....
but the manga should have ended right after 145, no need to extend the plot for almost 3 other volumes.
It's been what.. almost 15 years since I first read this manga, I still remember how happy I was in 145, Nishino is just that great.

I read this elsewhere and it's so bad it made me appreciate the bullshit ending we got.

@Scam

Bullshit ending so you mean you wanted the author to stick to the idiotic pratice of “first girl always wins” even though she’s boring as fck?

People still not over this one huh?

Nishino put in a ton of work the whole story, a little too much even. I think people just missed it because her chapters weren't as dramatic as Aya's chapters. There was a lot of mundane/subtle "wins" with her. If anyone thinks ending with Nishino wasn't supported by the story please read it again without any bias because you are really missing out. It really is a well crafted story where the real development happens in the background while the main focus is a sort of distraction. Now if you just happen to like Aya better and you did notice all of the subtle stuff that happened, then that is your preference so I can't argue there.

My only complaint really is that Satsuki got a raw deal being relegated to "overly aggressive sexy girl". I liked it when she was Junpei's friend who was struggling with being his buddy but wanting to be closer to him while not really understanding how to do that as a girl. It was a really missed opportunity to have another angle where there was a girl_friend character trying to close that gap and become the girlfriend.

I appreciate the sentiment, but this is not great. Kinda misses the point and picking this part of the manga to have the big "he chooses Aya over everyone else" is pretty poor. When he could confide in Aya over things he couldn't with Tsukasa and would lie to her would where the "he goes with Aya" would actually fit.

And my counter argument against @Bloodstone from someone who just re-read it with an open mind is that: the story was well crafted in that until the park scene in the snow when Manaka was failing his exams it could have literally gone either way and both endings would work in a way.

With that said, I felt the events that led him to choose Tsukasa was surprisingly weak
and very questionable considering the rest of the build up to that point. With all the events after Aya's confession it honestly would have fit the story and the overall themes if he had dumped Tsukasa and went with Aya. A bittersweet goodbye from Aya instead actually felt anti climactic and made 2/3 of the year feel pointless.
