The whiplash in this chapter was bizarre. The heavy topic of child abuse and an extremely stressed and visibly unstable Mother is resolved as a gag. That’s weird. The issue as well is framing, the series portrays the beating and injury seriously and not as joke. It’s not like a gag manga where the parent is hitting the kid while saying some funny line, and the kid is fighting back while retorting. I mean it would be like framing someone getting stabbed on the street seriously with police, hospital, and all that as a seriously traumatic event, and then resolving it with a gag that the stabber and stabbed are practicing chopping up sushi together. 🙁

A few years later: "And kids, thats the story of How I Trained Your Grandma."

To all of you who didnt like (i also didnt like it) how such a heavy topic like child abuse got resolved in such a... fast and light way. You gotta understand that the author suddenly got his series serializated so he had two options: rush things to end this pre-serializated version or just do like other authors do and leave his series incomplete/open/whatever.
I know it still may not sit right with some people, but things are like that. Lets just hope that if this topic also appears in the serialized version, the author treats it with more "respect".

@Clouded-
Thanks dude, much appreciated.

Calling it dog shit is too far-fetched. But yes, there're loopholes and problems in their legal system.

Oh, that makes sense. Though, I didn't hate it or anything. I'm actually a fan of darker realism being dropped in like that.

@CyBerK everything they show to the exterior is just marketing and selling a facade of what their true culture is. You can just see how fucked up is Japan as a society just by watching animes and manga and analyzing and asking yourself how this is allowed.

Prostitution pre 18yo , sexual harassment , high rate of suicide and loneliness , extreme racism toward foreigners , shady government and obsolete laws. Ofc this happens everywhere however Japan tries so hard to hide it that makes me sick.

They just sell an image that differ from reality. Real Japan is more than just Akihabrara.

I completely agree.

I do take it with the bad and the good however - Japan is amazing to visit. Just maybe not to live in.

And I do like the idea that they promote where society is more than the sum of its parts. As a species we need to start working on collectivism instead of individualism because it has NOT been working out.

@Tearsax Oh thank you for that, it definitely makes a lot more sense now why it was wrapped up so hurriedly when that conflict that had been built up over so many chapters.

@Freestyle I’m brown dude, grew up in Asia, parents smacking kids was normal for us and worse for many of my older cousins. My older cousin, when he was naughty, his dad used to beat him with a leather belt. My mother burned and scarred my hand with a matchstick in anger when I was 5. She still feels guilty for taking her frustration with my father out on me, and to this day sometimes cries in shame. Before you judge her by a handful of acts, she’s a great mom who has done so much, more than most other parents I’ve ever met.

The MC’s mom used the corner of a picture frame to crack his head open, and cause him severe pain. The guy is traumatized by his mother’s behaviour. And she herself is wracked by her own insecurities and fears, which she is taking out on her child. And that’s how that part of the story is being framed by the author.

I’m not trying to pick a fight or anything but I don’t think we should be minimizing abuse regardless of where it happens. Whether it’s those ‘westerners’ kids or parents you’re talking about or kids in other parts of the world, if it’s traumatizing children who are at the mercy of their parents then it’s abuse.

@MangaRockRefugee I think we might have misunderstood one another there. When I say “I don’t think we should be minimizing abuse,” what I mean is that we shouldn’t treat abuse as a minor issue. We should treat it seriously because of the lifelong traumatic effects it can have on people.

Hopefully that cleared up my initial statement.

@Zikakuto I suspected that you meant what you say you meant, but still, it's so poorly phrased that it's on par 'beat it with Jesus' billboard against masturbation

Up until you posted that link I didn't know minimisation was a technical term in psychology. The only definition I knew meant reduce (generally in size or quantity). I'm assuming most people use this definition of minimise too. So your sentence literally means "I don't think we should reduce the amount of abuse".

So in this sense it can be said that it's poorly phrased. But I will say that anybody who reads the entire comment should be able to understand that wasn't what you meant. As such personally I don't think there's an issue with what you wrote.

From my understanding you meant something along the lines of "no matter the circumstances abuse is abuse and you shouldn't understate the significance it has on an individual". Which is hopefully close to what you wanted to convey.

You got what i meant wrong. I'm aware of their issues. What i meant is calling them dog shit is too far-fetched. If Japan is categorized in your book as dog shit, what country is "normal" and "good"?
