anime was better with the portrayal of that last part, props to the studio for elevating that scene up to 1000
I think that the whole three last chapters are much better in the anime adaptation (season 1 episode 11):
  • chapter 40
    • The conversation about using cosplay is more coherent, because there's one more line from Gamou – in the manga the suggestion about cosplay costumes (page 4) comes out of nowhere.
    • Senpai's imagination of the President (page 5) as a giant who is eating Senpai is just cooler in the anime
    • The start of chapter 42 is altered and moved here, just before Nagatoro runs away. This turns this conversation into an introduction to the idea that Senpai wants to draw/paint Nagatoro as seen in a her casual life. Some lines from the cafeteria scene are merged into this conversation.
      • Note: this splits the conversation of chapter 40 across two separate days.
    • Senpai's decision to paint without Nagatoro (page 6) is better motivated, because in an anime-original scene on the second day Nagatoro and her friends kept escalating the suggestions: swimsuit → cosplay → Angel's cleavage
    • The way Nagatoro tries to touch Senpai just before running away the first time is more dramatic/impactful in the anime compared to the manga, where she continues holding his shoulders (page 7) because of the previous part of the conversation.
    • The conversation with the president (pages 12–19) seems to be written a bit better in the anime, though this might be a problem in the manga's translation.
  • chapter 41
    • The emotional buildup to the climax of the episode is structured differently, with anime-original scene near the pool (it's near a tree in the manga).
    • Nagatoro reaching a dead end and climbing a tree (pages 9–11) kinda breaks the flow between Senpai's flashbacks (pages 5–8) and the conversation which starts at page 12. It's more smooth, almost seamless in the anime.
    • In the manga, Nagatoro on the tree looks to the side and ignores Senpai, but in the anime she completely turns her back to Senpai, which is more dramatic.
    • Nagatoro and Senpai falling into the pool cools them down (figuratively and litterally), and makes for a gentle descent on the emotional rollercoaster for the viewer with additional fanservice.
  • chapter 42
    • Unnecessary stuff in the middle of the chapter was cut:
      • most of the scene in the cafeteria – the food snatching/teasing/swapping (pages 7–8), which isn't related to the story of the arc;
      • explanation of not being able to paint on the go, which doesn't need to be explained (page 9);
      • and the conversation about Senpai joining the swimming club (pages 10–14).
    • The conversation in the post-credit scene (pages 14–19) is better written in the anime, or maybe it also suffers from the aforementioned translation issues.
    • Addition of a street cat in the anime is cute.
