@MCX01 I'm fairly sure it's going to turn out the brother and sister pair are going to be the Hero and the Demon Lord in their past lives and her pulling out the sword was what triggered his past lives memories. Which is why she sensed darkness when she walked into the room despite the lamp being lite and why he spoke of being awakened and the sudden henchmen showing up to vow loyalty. Just a theory though....

Why do everybody want to be a hero? Doesn't pulling the sword out mean that there is a "great evil" coming. That means there would be war and death. Doing a yearly pulling contest is a good way to verify that it's still peaceful, but looking at the story line so far in which he awaken due to her pulling out the sword, they should've just left it alone. Plus, seriously? Cleaning a sword that have been in the tree for thousands of years because she's worried that it would rust? It's been there for a thousand year. Do you see any rust? Also, it's from the goddess. You really think that she would make a rustable sword?
