It's mostly a manga thing, really. It's adding more humor here, especially with this fake Lily date thing which didn't happen in the LN.

I feel like this mangaka is a fan of Lily and is trying to carve out more screen time for her. She's naturally silly so everything else gets more silly as a result. Guess we'll see. My memory of the LN is things remained mostly serious during this arc (with some jokes here or there, naturally).
