Sort of a complicated question. You'd best start further back. Aonoshimo has changed a lot- None of the past few chapters were in LN2. Most notably, LN2 had:
a culminating first kiss. Claire finally opened up for the first time and gave Rae her first and final kiss right before surrendering herself for execution.
As you might've guessed, this chapter was absolutely not in the LNs. Aono knows the superfans read the books and she's just messing with us at this point :qq:

To answer your question though, you can probably start either at the end of LN2's "Yu's Secret" or of "The Palace" and either way you'll be alright. I would recommend the former though because a bit was changed in the latter.
Ty so much

So much tension, the fact that Claire has drop all her prejudices to balance over Rei feel like a reward

My guess is Rae has become so ingrained in this role of savior that the idea of getting back in touch with her actual feelings has become distant until she can guarantee the tragedy isn’t happening.

It’s annoying that the yuri MC, once things get serious, backs away from her yuri desires and now wants nothing to do with it. But I guess it also brings a nice role reversal to the original dynamic.

Not surprised they're dragging it, would be too sweet too early. Will say though...

She would die for her Id imagine? Thats the implication.

I mean at the end of the day, author needs to earn money. Prolonging the story as much as humanly possible is the most common method to do so (though not everyone can do it properly). It is annoying but its is business. Like, i was expecting the two stooges to come in to interrupt way earlier. But they DID come. LN authors / mangaka are literally incapable of thinking anything different then their predecessors.

To be fair, this doesn’t even work with this story in particular since its not a Slice of Life. So them getting together wouldn’t end the story.
Also apparently none of this happened in the LN so they do seem to be taking a bolder route here.

That's a baffling writing choice if that is the case. Why would you drop your story's quality just to fit in some VERY outdated tropes.

I didn’t read the LN but my inference is that there wasn’t any initiative from Claire in terms of the relationship originally, so I’d say this is a better approach aside from the whole “interrupting the moment” bit.

This is from a LN, and this situation (though slightly different) all happens and resolves in the same novel. It's not about extending things. Rae's issue is not about burying her feelings, but feeling guilty because of what she is keeping from Claire. She shows as much during the chapter--the events we've been leading to for some time now.
