Hey guys, I'm gonna go out for a bit. Can you keep an eye on my chocolate milk and make sure nothing happens to it?

On one hand we have a normal human skin tone. In the other we have the complete absence of color. Which one do you think Japan will choose?

@Etaya The fuck? Is that all you got out of it? That everybody is racist? No, everybody starts treating her better because she got the blessing of the light spirit. Not simply because she turned white. Their fear wasn't towards her skin color at all. Nobody even mentions it!! Only the light spirit said something about it, and what she said was sorry, that she didn't expect her skin color to change. The fact that her skin turned white became a proof for people that she truly is now blessed by the light spirit.

The author herself is not really making having black skin to be a problem. The people who matter, the good people here do show regret at having her skin turn white. Don't forget, the opinion of those around her always belittled her, if they are racist it doesn't mean the author is too. She never tried to make the general people be good people here. She made them subjective to their own beliefs, and she makes it known that they are horrible people for doing that.

Even if the author did feel that way, you shouldn't ignore that she tried to imply many times that her skin color was never the problem. It was just an indication similar to her black hair and eyes.

@AnonDePlume

It does actually. Her parents get called out by MC. Her dad especially, mostly due to his ambiguous parenting. She basically lets out how she felt because he never decided how exactly to treat her which harmed her more than outright hatred or fear. He has good intentions but is very indecisive which hurts MC more.

Her mom she does less since her mom acknowledges that she can’t change how she treats MC but wants to at least meet halfway. MC pointed out how too late it was to do this. However MC does compromise somewhat since she feels better with her mom since her mom doesn’t do an abrupt 180 like a number of people.

Her friends find the change generally weird since they were so used to her one way. And MC finds anyone approaching her now uncomfortable and such. More so with any boys who try to court her for marriage when same boys kept their distance before.

As someone who read the translation scan of the light novel, she says that after she receives the blessing from the light spirit, her skin turns halfway from white to moreno (I think that’s how the skin color is named for when it’s too white to be black but also too black to be white), so according to the light novel her skin becomes a more whitened moreno skin. And her treatment after that is due to the BLESSING OF THE LIGHT SPIRIT, not the skin color, the nobles want the prestige of the light spirit that’s why they change how they treat her

if her skin tone change is because of some blessing, isn't that whitewashing by japan as it implies that having more melanin isn't normal and associated with less pure/holy "spirits" or something like that? @entity_101 or am i completely off the mark?

@mimicking Japan, China, and Korea all have a thing where the whiter the skin is the more beautiful. It's an old cultural thing that is still more or less ingrained in their culture. The reason as to why is because if you protect your skin you retain your youthful appearance longer and even stories of 70 year old grandmothers keeping an almost high schooler complexion. As for the white washing stuff realistically I would say no for both Japan and Korea as I don't think that was ever the intent. One must remember the western world is more sensitive to that because of slavery and especially America for segregation that came after. As for China well they removed the black guy from the star wars movie released in China so I'll trust that you can fill in the blanks as to why.

At the end of the day I have no idea on the motive behind it fully I can fancy a guess based on how the story is written but at the end of the day unless the author comes out and says something no one can know for sure.

I agree, whitewashing her (and the spirit guy, forgot his name) like this is not okay. Besides, her appearance is a big point in the story so why change it for the cover? Smh...

Thanks for the update!
