Wtf lol. This reminds me so much of a certain NTR doujin in a porn website that starts with n (don't know if I'm allowed to type a url to another website. I'll assume that its not). Just when the bleached version got released, the comments' opinion diverged. Some calling it racist, others liked the kokujin version, and 'other' others liked the new hakujin.

But that aside, I think its better plot-wise that she stays the way it was supposed to be. The author probably has his/her reason to change MC's skin color due to the blessing.

I have to wonder how scanlation group managed to get unfinished version when it was released two months ago, and the next chapter was released 10 days ago...

Here come the pearl-clutching brigade. In case you cretins too dumb to understand.

This shit got shit on in JAPAN, the backlash was from JAPANESE readers.

Think before you post god damn.

the idea of her changing in appearance was good actually, maybe just not the skin color as that can be sensitive to many lol
like that first page said, it does affect the plot a little bit because now obviously without change in appearance, people treating her differently now doesn't seem to make as much sense, but we can just say they changed because of her achievements and move on i guess

@Rugid it's not an unfinished version, the white skin version is the one that was released 2 months ago, the publisher stealth changed it without updating the date.

Raw mirror and aggregate sites still have that white skin one.

@.kowoyoshi (removing the actual @ since I didn't notice you said that) I'm sure everyone understands the in-story reason for it. That doesn't make it any less silly. I mean I make no statements speaking for the people screaming "Racism!" because I don't think it was meant to be racist, but it IS weird to design a character around a specific character trait, and then change that fundamental aspect of that character after people have had a chance to fall in love with her character and design. It's almost the visual equivalent of writing the main heroine as a tomboy and then taking away her tomboyish attitude a few volumes in. Anyone who was a fan of her for being a dark skinned heroine in a market where those are few and far in between would feel robbed of their chocolate colored heroine.

I actually don't mind her being white? it shows the irony of the story well, where she's supposed to have "a better life" according all the other people, when she instead feels conflicted.

Also seriously I guess there's many idiot fans even in Japan. They miss such an obvious writing trope lol. MC's hair and skin was dark when she was born is literally because of the Dark Spirit King's blessing, NOT because she's from another race or something (like, if using another usual trope, Black Elves). Like seriously, if MC got blessed by another Spirit King and her skin ended up becoming red or blue or anything else, I don't think they will shouting foul play as much lololol.

Thank you for upload this version.
It reasonable to make it that way, light spirit only bless little, so the main color still black.
I am shock it suddenly her color turn white, because in WN say, whitening only 20%.

@sirflimflam That's... kind of a racist. You're really equating personality with race. We're talking Skin Color, not 17703. Or Wind Waker's Tetra -> Zelda for a more SFW example where a personality does a complete 180. in fact, the latter is exactly what you described (Tomboy -> Princess) You... Do realize that people act differently based on way more than just their skin color, right? Claudia's skin being White instead of Tanned doesn't mean she's suddenly going to start throwing around racial epithets and wearing spooky ghost costumes, right?

It's the color of her SKIN- which the Spirit Kings can influence quite easily, as easy as bestowing their favor on someone apparently. But apparently what skin color the protagonist has is more important than story cohesion. That's how I've viewed all of this, since I really don't care what race she is.

Further reminder, we're dealing with MAGIC stereotypes, not racial ones. Since Dark Magic is typically equated with Evil, and Light with Good.

What the fuck am I doing, making such a long post no one's going to actually give a shit about, I should just ignore this, but I keep throwing myself back into this dumpster fire of a 'controversy'

I understand why her skin color changed from the blessing but it just was weird. I got used to her tanner. I would be fine if she was white for a couple of chapters and then goes back to tan for some reason. I just think it would have been a much safer option to change her eyes or hair so there wouldn’t be so many angry people. I don’t see this as a white washing thing and personally for me even if she were kept whiter the story still holds up. I’m glad the author didn’t just like make her all happy and stuff though after the blessing, but instead showing us how she feels about everyone’s attitude change toward her. Also I hate the parents, if she just forgave them then I would be mad but the author thankfully didn’t do that.

I still think she should've had her skin changed because of the plot and message that goes behind the change, just not to a drastic 180 of white, she could've gotten something in the middle like brown skinned and it would've still sent the message, though I guess it might be difficult to show that in Manga? Not sure

Her absolute despondence and depression at the end confused me. I understand that she would be cold and jaded towards her parents and the clinger-ons that have popped up with her being blessed by the Light King. But for months, she had been able to befriend people that accepted her as she was and were WILLING TO TAKE A KNIFE FOR HER. I would have expected this reaction if even her current friends started treating her way better, showing that even they kept her at arms length until now.

I mean, unless publisher also changed chapter 13 along with 12 to have dark skin, then how scanlators managed to miss new chapter and didn't check the previous one in the past 10 days?
