She went a tad crazy for a while she's fine now though, just obsessed with studying and finding her own path to grow stronger.

This isn't a spoiler, just what's been shown so far since I can't remember the exact details from the novel:
She died on a mission and Joseph blames himself for not getting to her quickly enough to save her and for never verbalizing that he loves her, our favorite masked black mage seems to have been involved in it, directly or indirectly or even accidentally we haven't been shown yet.
