Actually, I think there's something wrong with her mother. either that, or the artist doesn't know what 'poor' is is probably still understating it.
With that design, the house could potentially be above >1 million in the US, nevermind China, where housing prices can be heavily inflated. Ignoring the apparent quality, and estimating cost relative to size by extrapolating total size just off what we can see, it'd be at least in the 330K-550k range, so your half-million estimate does work as a good minimum estimation.
"According to the IMF ’s house price-to-wage ratio, China has seven of the world’s top ten most expensive cities for residential property. All through the country's tier-one, tier-two, and even some tier-three cities, housing prices are severely out of proportion with the incomes of the people who live there." (Forbes)
Roughly estimating the square meterage [by referencing US houses of similar design] and comparing it against typical square meter cost in China, that house looks to be at least 1.5 million USD in value [assuming its remaining size matches to what we can see of it, and using the same determination of quality as per the minimum estimate for the US cost].
To summarize:
You may be entirely correct by your half-million / million estimates but, by China's standards and by my understanding of such matters, that should probably instead be 1.5 million / 3 million. And all of those valuations should still just be us going off a fairly low estimatation of value.
