I would like to note that, unless this chapter takes place before 13.5 where she had explicitly learned who is Hikari's CF she's in love with, there's no irony in Yami not recognizing Yuu's silhouete here. Most likely, she had recognized him, she just decided to play it down around Hikari

It would really depend on how it’s done tbh. My biggest issue with her presently outside of meta reasons (her flashback absolutely KILLED the pacing and tone IMO) is that she’s got an arc that we know ends in betrayal of possibly the sweetest girl ever who genuinely cares for her and thinks of her as her most important friend. If there’s no actual betrayal then she can actually have a fully realized arc with growth. I’d still be frustrated at her about some things but it would at least put me in a mindset where I could see a future where I like her.

She’s still a melodramatic bitch but if she can be one that genuinely supports her friend then that’s workable, Vegeta is one of my favorite characters after all.
Thanks, agreed. It's a really delicate corner to have painted themselves into. "We now interrupt your regularly scheduled episodic love-status-quo-romcom to bring you a serious romantic drama in flashback, but first: (heroine trying to finally confess is apparently blindside-NTR'd by Friend A cliffhanger)" is absolutely Hold My Beer levels of confident. Doing it while continuing the biweekly format and really luxuriating in the flashback is insane.

Reading this now and seeing where it's positioned makes the unfolding drama all the more weird. Did the author just really want to fuck the readers or is this somehow going to get brushed off ignoring the endless flashback that followed :wowee:
Yeah, not really loving these "extras" that show up after the rugpulling twist and completely change the tone and context of the surrounding material. Imagine somebody coming along and reading the series from the beginning a year from now, and also imagine that person innocently being like, "wow, that was a really cute chapter, but I don't get this extra - lemme check the commen-OH NO

Both. And we know she isn’t being genuine (knowingly or not) because of chapter 21
I have a sense that what we just learned in the extra chapters helps explain why Yami did what she did in Chapter 21- Basically she realized that Hikari's crush was Yuu, took some time to reflect, and decided she wanted him back. Leading to her awful plan of kissing Yuu, betraying Hikari, and probably confusing the heck out of Yuu all at once.

If I'm right, then Yami didn't do it impulsively but intentionally. Her charges go from "manslaughter" to "homicide."

This one and 13.5 were released together with volumes 1 and 2 respectively, so they are not really positioned anywhere. They are just flashback chapters to provide more "meat" to their friendship and fill some gaps.
Otherwise I don't see what's so confusing. It's pretty transparent - they became good friends, and that's what will make the drama even more painful for both.

Regardless, my one silver lining hope is that they don’t make Hikari just bow out or something like that, she deserves a genuinely good ending.

Mate, reread Yami's monologue from chapter 21. How can you still think she had some kind of plan to have him back when she explicitly says about running away and hiding?

Yami's words read like poison to me & reading Hikari's words on Yami being an "irreplaceable friend" makes the feeling even worse.

I think even without the darker undertones it does seem like fleeting thoughts from a teen, but at that age ur not rly thinking about expecting to be with the same group of friends/partner when ur in ur 40s too but I wonder how many ppl irl would be like “this is too much drama I’ll just find someone else” but unless there’s some payoff vs rage bait, idk how likely it would be for the “childhood friends” to get married

At least this is fictional, idk if the author would’ve had a similar experience

But might be 50/50 on the other friends finding out and ostracizing her or so

Also, since the manga omitted a lot of stuff from the WN version again, I will just post some details.

By the time the clock pointed to around 1:30 am, the chaos had mostly...

Ayami: "The ones who say, Let's stay up all night talking! are always the first to fall asleep~."
Hikari: "Ahaha, Aya-chan, cut them some slack~."

...well, not completely died down, but close enough.
At least, thanks to the noisy duo finally dozing off, I didn't have to worry about disturbing the neighbors anymore.

Ayami: "Seriously, you're all just way too goody-two-shoes. I'm surrounded by little kids."
Hikari: "Wait, Aya-chan, have you really stayed up all night before?"
Ayami: "Oh, plenty of times. I've had a guy keep me up until morning, you know~."
Hikari: "Ughhh, you just had to go there again~."

Even so, I couldn't deny that, just for tonight, Aya-chan's tales had come to my rescue.
If it weren't for her, Haru and Yuki's relentless curiosity about my next-door childhood friend would've exposed everything -- his name, his school, maybe even his life story.

When I was at my wits' end, it was Aya-chan's blunt and shockingly unfiltered anecdotes about her vast male experience that turned the tide.
Her stories left everyone else too flustered or stunned to respond, they were my saving grace.

Like the time she bailed on a paid dating meetup, or when she hit up a love hotel at the crack of dawn, or how she went to the beach with a guy but never made it outside their hotel room.
Tales like that... stories no one knew how to react to... came pouring out one after another.

Thanks to her oversharing, the others started talking less and less, until one by one, they finally drifted off to sleep.
And so, my innocence (?) was spared for another day.

Yeah more or less. I’ve liked characters who have done much worse but who had good redemption arcs, but that kiss (as far as we understand the context behind it) shows that she’s not committed to improving.
Yeah i get it. What is your view on the context behind that kiss btw? I always of the belief that emotion just got the better of yami and thats why she kiss yuu after the slap.

I’m trying to withhold assumptions, but currently I don’t think it was planned but I do think she did it on purpose. Honestly it would take a LOT to make it acceptable in my eyes, to the point where the presented scene wouldn’t make sense anymore.
