The tittle itself is a flex on the first chapter tittle.

By the way, remember when Yami tried to steal a kiss from the protagonist?

I personally think they were together up until chapter 18, since Yuu's behavior was too noticeable different that even Hikari recognizes something was wrong.
I'm not certain. Because the way he behaved differently was in that he was acting more awkward around her, where if changes came from breaking up, it's more likely he'd be depressed.

However, if the scenario is that due to the "confession" at the fair he realized he still had feelings for Hikari and broke up with Yami, which might also be why he wanted to avoid her school. And the reason for the slap-then-kiss. Emotionally confused teenager

I just assume Aya had told him everything via text in chapter 18 since he was on his phone while he was being awkward. Would explain why he was acting a bit off in chapter 19, 20, and 21. And why he dipped out so quickly in chapter 20.

That doesn't make sense. The entire "confession" at the fair only happened because the dumbass friend at chapter 16 outed Yuu in wanting to be in the same school since he told Hikari the school he's attending was his number one choice.

Bro literally had no choice but to explain to Hikari his reasoning because at the time, he still thought and believed Hikari never had any romantic feelings for him and thought it might ruin the vibes and their friendship if she thought he loved her or something. So why would he break up with his GF that loves him, and he loves her, for a childhood friend that at the time, he didn't know loves him. He had everything to lose and nothing to gain from that.

Also to further prove my point, it literally takes Hikari being taken to a secluded spot in the fair on what might be a confession on her part to finally get the idea that Yuu might have liked her.

Idk, seems too much High-risk for almost no reward if you ask me.

Those former classmates brought the idea to the forefront again, that's what I mean. He touched on those former feelings because they reminded him of the reality of it. We know now that he was trying to get into the school because he liked her. The relationship with Yami may have caused him to successfully push it down, but being reminded of the original situation.

So why would he break up with his GF that loves him, and he loves her, for a childhood friend that at the time, he didn't know loves him. He had everything to lose and nothing to gain from that.

Because he realized that if he did still have those feelings that he was being unfair to Yami. If you're in a relationship with someone else for over a year at that point and still have strong feelings for a different person, that's likely not going to change and the relationship you are in is likely doomed to fail (hurting the other people worse in the process).

I just assume Aya had told him everything via text in chapter 18 since he was on his phone while he was being awkward.
Him being on his phone with them back to back is just the "normal" setup for them. It was exactly like that in Chapter 1.

If indeed Yami broke up with him via text (which seems weird at this point in Yami's story, but maybe makes sense later), I don't think the focus would have been on Yuu acting awkward around her. He seemed very "aware" of her, and I see no connection to him being broken up with.

On the other hand, a low bar for romcoms doesn't mean that a drama should necessarily be allowed to lower its own bar, either.

Besides, the main issue here isn't only that 20 chapters in is a bit late* to introduce a major source of drama, but that the series was essentially masquerading as something else until that point. Yes it read like a simple fluff romcom with slow pacing, but there is an established market for such things. The stakes ramped up way too suddenly, with at most 3 vague hints beforehand (of which all but one could be interpreted as Hikari already being "in").

There's also just the issue of audience. The manga drew in the fluffy/low-stakes romcom fans (hi that's me) and nearly 20 chapters in is just too far along in the plot to make such a pivot in genre without backlash from the existing readerbase.

I will say I'm curious where this is headed, but it's hard to invest myself into the series anymore because the expectation i built up for what I was reading was torn into shreds in the span of a chapter and then each individual piece was dragged across my heart to make as many papercuts as possible.

* title reference not intended
I disagree on the masquerading as something as being a bad thing. The author is clearly making a subversion of the typical romcom slop/fluff. Trying to contrast the wholly unserious nature of a romcom vs that of a dramatic soap opera. There really is nothing better than flipping the first half's tone, to invoke such a visceral reaction from your audience. Being able to make people feel things, even against their will, is a mark of an interesting story. I think the fact that you are willing to follow though and hate-read more of this manga really attests to that point.
And 20 chapters of this story is still in volume 1 mind you (I think). This is pretty well paced if read in one go.

This manga is a really good opportunity for some introspection on why people enjoy the SoL romcom fluff. I think I understand their audience alot better now just from reading their reactions here.

Zeb Wells, you've outdone yourself.

That said Yami is kinda growing on me. It's a shame it's come at the expense of... damn I forgot her name already. But drama is at the core of the trade. Kinda wish we'd go back to present time now though.
