If they had a secure enough relationship and a healthy pattern of communication, they could avoid those sorts of language games. But it's these idiots. Hikari thought she was his close childhood friend and neighbor. Then found out he didn't trust her enough to tell her about his feelings, and instead he went out and boinked someone else. He unilaterally rejected himself, without involving her. If I was Hikari, I'd be upset by that.

I can't unremember Chapter 2 Hikari trying to get up the courage to ask Yuu on a date, and then demanding Yuu stand by the window in silence for what ended up being HALF AN HOUR. It's this kind of selfish from Hikari that gives Yuu low self-esteem. She treated him like a doormat, and unfortunately, he complied like one. If I was Yuu, I'd have exposed Hikari's entitled behaviour and told her to message me if she ever gets her sh*t together. I think all the characters would have been better off if he'd called out Hikari's BS instead of playing obedient lapdog.

The only reason why Hikari doesn´t seem as selfish as she really are, is because the reason I said before: she is the platonic incarnation of negative golden rule. She never will treat other person like she doesn´t want to be treated, but that is all. Hikari never has a really altruist act in the entire stories, she only acts if somebody is begging to her to shouts or tears, she never will SACRIFICE for others, and this is something she herself said it. And of course, this attracts the sympathy of a lot of selfish ego-willed women who we can see in the threads about this series. But even the fucking menhera of Yami really worried more about Yuu problems, concerns and future. Of course, this wouldn´t impede Yami abandon Yuu and hurt even more than Hikari ever did.
Hikari is a comfortable mediocrity, she won´t warm you but she won´t hurt you either. But even Anna Yanami the Otter from Makeine is more truely emphatetic than her.
And yes, this is the reason why she punching Yuu in chapter 38 was so strange and out-of-place from her personality and with some of luck we will see Hikari apologizing at least for that act of violence after see how Yuu expressed in this chapter he is still emotionally affected to being physically agreded by Hikari.

I mean, this applies with his role with Yami too, the main difference is his relationship with Yami recognized explicitly he was his submissive boyfriend and worked precisely based on this. Yami wanted a boy who never never would do to her nothing what she didn´t wanted it.
But Yuu being the submissive of somebody mentally unstable like Yami definitely was one of the main weaknesses of their relationship. The boy chose the wrong dominatrix, equal as Haruki before him. That is why Yami is so fucking androginous and has a hair-cut so masculine to the point she almost seems a man with boobs for moments.
Hikari is right in complain about Yuu still now calling her "Yami-SENPAI", even now Yami is his dominatrix kek
Hikari being as passive coward as Yuu but less submissive curiously made more "normal" and in equality terms her "friendship" with "Aya-chan"
The good part of this chapter is Hikari finally realizing Yuu is a submissive person and she starts to use do in her relationship with him or she never will come to any side. He always asked her to take the reins and she finally will do what she should have done in chapter 10 as very late.

But Hikari is a girl, so it´s a good thing she doesn´t have a spine and she is a passive coward, because she is a girl. Definitely Imasara main focus have been subvert gender roles. Maruto has done a very good role reversal series.
