Yuu's the supporting character who gets between the protags (here Hikari and Aya) and that character is usually/often not likable on purpose so that the audience roots for the protags to make up.

Hikari deserves someone who is emotionally stable. While Hikira has her own flaws but hers are way more normal for a teenager. Falling in love blindly and not seeing who that person truly is now. If the author decides to do a decent story with Hikira was realizing she doesn’t love the current Yuu any more but still care for him as a friend and move on.

She’s way more emotional stable to being with someone who is so wishy-washy like Yuu.

Sometimes I really feel like I'm looking down on people from on high when I can read this story about intentionally flawed characters and enjoy it, because you're not supposed to have to like someone as a person to enjoy them as a character in a drama. Darth Vader isn't a good person, but he's a good character because he's a bad person.

All these people trying to turn this into a some sort of team sport where you cheer for one character and hate the other, and hate the people who picked differently...can't you just enjoy the story, in which everyone is an integral part?

I think Maruto is doing good character work where Hikari/Aya/Yuu feel real enough that a lot of folks can either relate or have dealt w/ similar people, which is what I think leads to folks sometimes conflating analysis of a character with picking a side.

I can do that AND criticize characters, actually.

No shit they're intentionally flawed, so what? I can criticize Darth Vader for being the Youngling Slayer 3000 while fully acknowledging it's intentional. That doesn't take away from any criticism I might have of him.

There are more people who just want to critique in good faith than actually "picking a side".
Most comments that "pick a side" are very clear on that, and yet still actually provide reasons for why they do within the story.

Some people enjoy the story.

Some people don't enjoy aspects of the story and actually have reasons for it.

I may not agree with them, think they're bad or unconvincing reasons, or even be convinced by them, but "picking a side" does not make them wrong.
You'd have to actually prove why you think so and when you do, congratulations to fan discourse about the media they consume, like everybody else in here.

"Enjoying a story without comment cuz everyone is flawed" isn't some Herculean task that I need to pat myself on the back for in the comments.
If anything, it's the easiest to do in comparison to actually explaining your reasons why you dislike it.

Get off your high horse, not everyone wants to do the things the way you do.
