It appears that around midnight GMT the morning of Feb 13, Imgur direct link images have stopped working on the site. See smaller discussions and examples on the forum here, here, and here.
It looks like images that have already been cached by MD are still working fine, and if one of those is reused in a new post, it works there as well. However, if an image hasn't been used on the site before, the image appears while entering the post (presumably since the user can see it directly), but when the post is previewed or posted, the image fails to cache on MD and the error placeholder is shown.
I am aware that Imgur has been geoblocking some regions (notably the UK last September), but have not seen anything this morning that would indicate there's a new block in place in the last 24 hours.
