I'm betting the father wanted to kill the daughter, probably for personal benefits or for her liking the brother, and paid the assassin. They would use that as an excuse to get rid of the son because they are keeping their "noble prestige" by taking care of a "useless" child.

Not giving them an excuse, but the father was probably waiting for literally any reason to kick him out, they just needed some "noble" excuse to do it. Calling it a failure of his power saves the family's face while kicking out what they think is a curse they couldn't get rid of without looking bad.

Still ass writing but nearly every story like this has a terrible beginning.
