This wasn't an axe. This was the author literally not knowing how to end it. He even says as much in the notes in volume 7.It was ok. Not nearly as bad as an axe ending usually is.

This is really weird. I could have sworn I read an entirely different ending to this manga where all the characters had been locked up in a cold storage prison and released by Kenzaki.
