Johnny Sylvester (11 years old at the time) was seriously injured in 1926 after being thrown and kicked by a horse. Suffering from conditions like osteomyelitis and blood poisoning, his story drew national attention and gifts, including a signed baseball from Babe Ruth, who promised to hit a home run for him in the 1926 World Series.

After Ruth hit three home runs in Game 4 on October 6, newspapers reported that Sylvester's condition had improved.

Sylvester lived until 1990, passing away at age 74.
