Shikanoko Nokonoko Koshitantan - a running discussion/review thread with a rather longish title, but it seems I've found the character limit for these

Episode 5: Dig Up the Dirt!! Presumably it's about Rupert Murdoch? ... But it's not - it covers chapters SHIKANOKO NOKONOKO KOSHITANTAN 3, SHIKANOKO NOKONOKO KOSHITANTAN 4, and SHIKANOKO NOKONOKO KOSHITANTAN 21.

Finally, some of the early weirdness makes an appearance. As expected, causality has no place here, and the three chapters pretty much proceed to plan, with a couple minor adjustments/additions to pad out the time. THIS is more like what I was hoping for.

Nothing particularly new in terms of music or voice acting; the switch back and forth between cel-drawn and CGI deer in the first section is a bit disconcerting (more so than just using one or the other would have been). This seems like a bit of a throwaway episode in terms of envelope-pushing, unfortunately.

At any rate, we're now into the meat of the series. SHIKANOKO NOKONOKO KOSHITANTAN and all that.

Some changes have been made, but yes, the impossible was done: putting those chapters and making them look like they belong to a different year. Maybe they'll go further than the current scanlations?

It wouldn't surprise me, at least in reference to the Chapter 27 on MD or 29 on the site @prussianbluehedgehog has put together that are available at the moment. It's also possible the producers take enough time to get back through some of the other chapters that the scanlations stay ahead through the end of the season. Regardless, I really want to see an episode just dealing with Chapters 13-14.

In time I suppose. Well, if they're that close to the raws, they'll either go along with the author wishes or completely derail, for instance I remember 16-bit Sensation that they changed it from the beginning and then expanded it and gave a new ending. I hope the author gets involved with the production then (besides writing more manga), I don't want a repetition of the second season of K-On! with completely plain characters.

Crunchyroll: Hey, "My Deer Friend Nokotan" is a Wednesday release now!
Me: YOU MOTHER FU-

SHIKANOKO NOKONOKO KOSHITANTAN

-SEND YOU THE COBBLER'S INVOICE!

Episode 6: The Summer Deer Festival. Comprising - wait, eighteen mini episodes? What the shika? - chapters 19.5, 25.5, 24, and... a couple of chapters that haven't been translated/posted here yet, I'm guessing.

WE HAVE ARRIVED, LADIES AND GENTLEDEER. A hitherto unattained rate of visual gags and fourth wall breaking has been achieved, and the show is now in full swing, firing on all cylinders, and hitting its stride. There's nothing particularly notable about the animation, voice acting (though Shikanoko's VA is in fine form as usual), or music, because all of the energy for the episode appears to have been spent working out a rapid fire storyboard. And I think they do a good job of pacing to cover the material without either rushing or dragging.

ALSO TSUCHI SHOWS UP! Huzzah! (Though I think it's a missed opportunity to not launch into an alternate version of the opening theme at the corresponding point in the episode....)

SO: Regardless of what happens from this point, and what material gets covered or omitted, I believe it will be possible to point to this episode and say that, at least once, the show did the source material proud.

I told you that it was released on Wednesday with proper subs, matching the Japanese screening, ha ha. I think I prefer this format compared to how episodes 2-4 have been.

Yeah, I had seen it at some point Wednesday evening US time, and went and looked up the CR press release, but I think I'm going to keep waiting until Sunday to watch and review because I'm middle aged and dislike change. :haa:

but if it was being done by Art Blakey and The Jazz Messengers in 1958 at Rudy Van Gelder's parents' house in Hackensack. It would probably sound nothing like this:
Anyway...

More absurdity with our two main characters. As with last week, Shikanoko carries most of the voice acting (though Koshitan certainly has a few moments, and the one off character doesn't disappoint). The animators get a bit more opportunity to stretch this week - a couple of spots they get to dip into some other styles briefly, to good effect. Another new Shikanoko song, or at least part of one, and plan on hitting the pause button to read some of the subtitles - it's worth it in the middle third.

The effect isn't quite as manic as last week, but another fine effort from the production staff in this one.

Slight delay this week, because life and stuff.
DId you know you can nest spoilers? You can!
Episode 8: Deer After Deer. Covering chapters 12, 13, and 14.

Again, good work with the source material this week - just enough variation from the manga to keep it interesting. And we got the Game of Life in the second half, which is a pair of chapters I was looking forward to. The transition between halves was also a nice nod to the year-end comedy/variety shows that so frequently pop up in manga and anime.

Aside from the writing, however, nothing to really distinguish this week's episode. No major animation surprises (well, except for a bit of a jump scare in the first half), no particularly over the top voice acting, no musical numbers. I'd really like to see the series stretch its legs a bit more, given the material. Hopefully at least the teased episode 10 will provide something on that front, if not the next one.

Episode 9: Get the Sports Festival Done! Covering chapters 25 and 26.

Lather, rinse, and repeat from last week. A good treatment of the source chapters, particularly the introduction to the episode, and some good voice work from both of the MC actresses, but aside from that nothing to really stand out here, so I'll leave it at that.

Episode 10 now has a fairly high bar to be cleared by having been teased earlier in the season.

Episode 10: Blame it on the Spring, covering chapters 16, 27, and 28.

The handling of chapter 16 is exceptional - this is exactly the level of WTF and adjustment from the source material I expect. The overall plot is kept, but with the additional characters, some additions from one or two otaku on staff, and a couple gags that work in animation better than on the page, the whole chapter is improved. THIS is what I want from the series - absurdity writ large.

Sadly, the balance of the episode is... mediocre at best. We get a nice stretch with the two secondary MCs, but there's nothing in the second half that really makes me sit up and go 'wow!' like the first half. (Though we do get the rice paddy teased in episode 3.) Good VA, not much else of note.

Episode 11: The Pursuer and the Pursued, covering chapters 29, 30, and... 6? Not complaining, I like chapter 6, but damn that's a callback at this point.

Again, one FANTASTIC take on chapter 30, and a couple good-but-not-great takes on the outer thirds. The middle section is worth the time for the entire episode, at least.

BUT WAIT... WHAT'S THIS... A POST CREDITS SCENE? THAT SETS UP WHAT MIGHT BE A FIGHT CLUB-STYLE EPISODE WHERE SHIKANOKO WAS ALL IN KOSHITAN'S HEAD? (Or something totally different. Hell, I don't know. I just want it to be exceptional.)

Well, one thing I can say for sure is that the anime forums are a battlefield thanks to the series, which is... an excuse to buy a lorry full of maize and try several popcorn recipes?
