Let's be real here, everyone pretty much don't even rate and just dropped anything that they find below 7/good/"average" by their standard.

And yeah, objectivity is a myth

@N0Mi0 I don't want to deal with troll especially since I'm in quints loss right now but, unless you the so great human can proof something like why Yotsuba is objectively the best quint then please never ever mention me again.

And DanDan thoughts on rating by tags is much better than strange calculation that would only drive more people to score 10 to get their beloved series got their deserved score.

oh I get that and wasn't trying to imply bad vs good but useful or not. In a reverse way I do what you stated. When I read comments I notice certain names and a similar taste and then I might go look at their read list to see if they like something / rate something high that I haven't picked up. But these are individual ratings and I believe the OP was talking about a collective average.

To me there is a difference in usefulness between ratings and reviews. I don't use and in general ignore average rating numbers which since you can't tell much about peoples preferences.

A review to me is verbal description of someone's opinion and can be more useful assuming it is more then just "Great", "Sucks".... A good review while still biased can be useful. On another site I've seen people review and state a preference for art and then mention I liked it / hated it ... it reminded me of manga x. That gives me some indications of how I might look at the review and make a judgement. Just the fact that if someone states a preference of art over story can make me look at their review differently (I'm a story over art guy myself).

Reading the comments sections, not the one liners, can be like reading a bunch of mini reviews. In some cases they can be useful. Not as one but when taken as many. I've read some where there were many comments that the author seemed confused by their own story or appeared to wandering with no direction. For me one comment, nope, but if it is repeated many times I have decided to ignore and spend my time on other manga.

Good, that would be dumb.

I don't know what formula you guys use to calculate scores, but it's functional enough as-is. It's not the best, but it works for what it is.

To be honest a simple method like the one Steam uses would be great too and in my opinion better.

"Would you recommend this title?"
"Yes"
"No"

Then based on those answers a percentage of approval.

Numerical ratings for any form of media are garbage, and say more about the voters than the series. While some systems are worse than others, even at their best they're still only as good and reliable as the site's userbase. Tags, written recommendations, synopsis, cover art and even a few pages are all going to give you a far more accurate idea as to whether it's going to be worth your time or not.

@Ore
I think Steam's rating system still requires a review. You're describing a Youtube/upvote/Digg/whatever shitty one or two-way rating system. Even then all of those still fall under similar problems to the ones you take issue with: a system with only "Likes" or +1s is pointless and will only show you whatever's popular. A "Positive-Negative" system won't say anything meaningful other than inoffensive things that get circlejerked getting a high score and anything controversial, weird, obscure, popular enough to get review-bombed or outright bad being lumped together with middling and mixed votes.

To solve the issue I therefore put forward the suggestion to implement a button-based rating-system. Users will get the option to choose whether to vote a series with any of the following in-built images: vomiting anime girl, a brick, smug loli, and a gif of the dancing letter "D"
Each image will have a counter of how many users have voted which option, and no formal explanation will be given as to what each of them means. Literally fool-proof.
