Hmmm... Marie-Joseph is obviously a neglected, psychopathic daughter and Charles-Henri is hated for his failures and softness, but can we count this chapter as bonding? I take it that Charles' internal monologue was about him AND Marie-Joseph. Him - because he's unfit and her - because she's a girl.

It doesn't sem enough to hate her though - her being born a girl. I guess they know HOW she is in that house and just don't care about guiding her. "She's weird, can't just mary her off" type of deal? IF Charles-Henri is the only one caring for her, aside from some servants (surely they have many), that's good. Whatever Marie-Joseph grows up to be (and it won't be a normal human being), she might have a soft spot for her older bro. POSSIBLY.
