This is what parents these days forgot or not know about. These days, parents usually do either
A. Forcing their kids to do school works and pack cram school after cram school from after school until it's time to sleep, or
B. Letting their kids do as they please, not teaching them anything because they fear the "domestic abuse" lawsuit, leading to the kids becoming irresponsible, whiney, and pathetic keyboard warrior.
When the thing parents should do is to let their kids do what they want to do as long as they are being responsible for it and they don't forget their main responsibilities as students: to study. Let the kids explore themselves, who they are, what they want to do, while monitoring them and making them stay on the right track for their own sake.
Forcing too much discipline on them is bad because it's going to kill who they are. Not teaching them to be responsible at least about themselves is also bad, because it would turn them into entitled losers.
