So they are in this mess because the old Emperor was incompetent at choosing a spouse and the long line of emperors right up to the kid were incompetent at reforming institutions to not let that kind of shit happen, where a single bad egg can spell the end of the dynasty in a mere few years.

My point is, an emperor put that scheming bitch in position to do that, and it was the job of every past emperor to build an empire where something like that couldn't happen in the first place. That it did doesn't speak well of their competence.
