Ablute (by extension ablutions) isn't exactly a dead word, however it's most generally used in more specific contexts. For example the most common usage would be religion based reference to the act of bathing to "purify" ones self (onesself?). It is also less commonly used to refer to cleansing things like oils or other substances with water in chemistry.
