It's just a very goofy story. It's a loose collection of tired tropes but the mangaka seems genuinely unwilling or unable to make them happen organically.
MC is the most wishy-washy person you've ever seen and, despite not wanting slaves or a harem, takes every step to grow his slave count/harem size. That's fine but the story doesn't seem like it's trying to be ecchi at all, besides the one slave he did want. Idk.

So MC is willing to bet his life, and the livelihood of Wendy and Shiro, just to save the woman who actively tried to kill an innocent man. Even if there was "no harm because healing potions", Renge actively tried murdering someone who was operating within the confines of the law.

Very funny thing is, Japan has one of the most law-abiding citizen to boot they have one of the biggest conviction rates i.e. if arrested you going to jail (found guilty).

1.2 Renges criminal acts are brutal. I will categorize by severity: Evading taxes(toll) -> Starting a brawl in private establishment -> Attacking government official (she kicked the guard) -> Taking a hostage -> Attempted murder.
In our modern world this would account in many places for minimum of 10 years in prison without parole up to death sentence (or life in prison). In medieval times prison for life or death sentence by hanging or chopping the head off for public to see. Prison sentence for life isn't better than death, eating rotten bread and drinking water while being used by prison guards until death isn't flowery compared to fast public death.
2) He is promoting corruption

4) He is enabling above stated criminal behaviors to cultivate
5) He is a bad guardian and slave owner (believe me parenting and owning a slave has a lot more in common than you think)
