Probably a case of diminishing returns; at one point, the slimes were worried about the stability of the engine and we see that even the barrier got stronger, so how much of that mana actually went to speeding up and how much just went to reinforcing everything to keep it from shaking apart?

But I just looked at the tags again, and realised, that although there's the harem tag, there's NO romance tag. It's extra frustrating because she's clearly giving him the signs she likes him to the point that even the others are noticing, and on some level he's aware of it because of how conscious of her he becomes when they're alone, but every time he has the chance to reciprocate her advances he keeps backing off instead.
