Minor correction: All pickles (and thereby pickled cucumbers) are preserved in a solution, including cornichons. The cornichon is simply another name for a gherkin, which are small cucumbers, probably about the length of your pinky. Traditionally, in France, they are pickled in vinegar with tarragon.
