I was always under the impression that Nobu didn't need to pay rent, else somebody would have come to them and ask for it, given how famous they must be due to their popularity among commoners and gourmands.

To be fair, i do know some landlords that have done similar things.
but but usually only a few months or so...writing off multiple years of rent is kind of a stretch.

The way they tell the rumor make it seems like it's a new landlord, so I guess it's not really years.

Why would they believe it outright. They should have verified first . They are well connected all thing considered so they can easily verify it as pressure from elites patrons will make it easier.
