No clue, I figure it would be better since it would be on record that it was an amicable split and not due to an issue like one cheating on the other. With a widowing any potential suitors wouldn't know if her personality was bad, or if she's a secretly a Black Widow, etc. which would could cause red flags on the dating scene.

Uh, there's no need to freak out about the nii-san. in various countries in Asia, including Japan, it's very common to call an older person with family-like address. Like neighbours or close family friends. Even if they're strangers, sometimes. It's just for respect.

If the person is relatively the same age as you, it'd be big bro/big sis (nii-san/nee-san in Japanese). If it's someone much older, then you'd use uncle/aunt or granpa/granma (ojisan, obasan, ojiisan, obaasan). For example, one might say "Uncle Greengrocer" or "Neighbour Auntie", you know?

If the wife has a habit of calling Souhei like this, it's probably because they were old friends before getting married.
