just gonna echo what others have said and say that the world building here is amazing. so many side characters are fully fleshed out and seeing moments like this where everything interconnects is so cool. in a way it kind of reminds me of the mushishi anime that really did amazing with building out the side characters and making them an integral part of the show.

Nice chapter! I guess next chapter it will be what happened inside the kitchen, right?

Hoho, I believe it won't be long now for Lord La Villon to visit Nobu. Wonder what he'll have there 😁

IIRC Nobu is set in the Germany/HRE-equivalent, since Gen is in the French-equivalent.

Also, Keltia does imply to me of “Celtia” -> Celts.
Though strangely, if we see the map (I believe it was on Gen), their position (both Germany & France) are in reverse
Unless, of course, I probably read it wrong 😅

Yeah, it probably is. We briefly saw Keltia when we met the Japanese guy who made soy sauce there. There tavern has a name that vaguely sounds like Gaelic.

Wondering if Zezeman, because he's from the south of the Empire, has this world's equivalent of Moroccan ancestry in him. :thonk: Or maybe Algeria or Tunisia? Would love to see some of their cuisine as we did in Gen with lablabi, which is from Tunisia.

Oilia is mostly France and not part of "The Empire", which seems to be that world's version of the https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Holy_Roman_Empire.
Indeed it should be obvious since the the main French language is the language of the onion (I.e. they speak Oilian even to this day): https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Langues_d'oïl

And the Empire, being as you mention the "Holy Roman Empire" which covered Germany, the Netherlands and Northern Italy - but the Emperor when it was at it's largest was also the King of Spain, pulling that in.

glasses are very versatile
Historically there have been several times when eyeglasses were popular accessories among noble women. The fashion brought the introduction of flat-glass eyeglasses with no corrective curvature, as well as lorngette-style glasses on a handle or stick, which did not rest on the face but were deployed for emphasis, as if to say "I am looking at this thing with great interest using my eyeglasses". In a similar way, the monocle was used by military officers to circumvent requirements that they have perfect vision while still having corrective lenses available. The practice of carrying a monocle as an officer became more far-sighted with age brought about a fashion of keeping one simply to suggest a level of status, especially since higher officers were often or exclusively drawn from the ranks of nobility.

Ikr? It always amazes me how much they bring back various plot threads and have them mingle together and flow so well that you can see actual progress being made to the world itself and not just within Nobu.

Man, I wish there was a second anime season with a larger emphasis on the world building instead of just being an advertisement for various Izakaya dishes. This series deserves more care and attention.
There is also Izakaya Gen, set in the same world but in a different country. There have been tantalizing overlaps of characters who have eaten at both establishments. The family that owns Gen includes a daughter of Japan who has become an employee of a noble minister of state. We will see if she decides to stay in the other world for good!
