Maybe a different variant. Japan did trade a lot in the Philippines way before they decided an isolation policy when western traders came. I bet there were a few cuisine exchanges at that time.

A surprise Ludwig Jr. went to Taisho beforehand, but it’s also funny Taisho called out Shinobu’s unnecessary strictness.
I do want to mention one translation that’s been tickling my linguistic brain for the past few chapters, if I may inject because I don’t know who to tell, and it’s that エーファ should be romanized as “Eva.” It sounds weird, but given his manga’s German background, that’s how German spells it because long story short, German “V” became went back and forth between the English equivalents of “V” and “F.” A wiki article on that, and audio clips with the pronunciation of “Eva.”

Actually, yeah, like, it’d probably be more worrying to readers of the original Japanese, wouldn’t it. The page when Shinobu realizes it has both kanji terms and the hiragana, so it’s probably written in hiragana only for ambiguity.
Treachery also isn’t the right word for this.
