With every new chapter, this story is proving more and more firmly that Namba is no hero of another world. He most certainly never defeated any demon kings or gods. He simply wouldn't have been able to, with his meager powers and lacking attitude. Who knows what he defeated there. Maybe some mid-boss at the very most, before he got sent back. Somehow he perfected the art of self-deception and fabricated the story of being a great hero in his mind. He's so good at the deception that even humans and variants on Earth seem to believe him, at least sometimes.

Thanks for the TL.

I ain't even finished the chapter but LOL 20 years later.

Edit: So I finished it and I might for the first time in my life read a light novel not written by nisio isin. I really want to know what this looks like unadapted. Overpowered Protagonist tag should also be removed on novelupdates, that shit is a lie.

I disagree, partially.
  • The part that I disagree with is how he wouldn't be able to win against a demon king.
Basically, he has a single trump card, which is a purely physical attack at lightspeed. This roughly means he attacks as if his opponent is in stopped time and the energy of his attacks is nearing infinity. This can make short work of any physical entity, no matter how powerful. If the demon king of the other world is just a big powerful demon without spiritual existence that can be killed through a sword slash, that's fine and dandy.
  • However, I definitely agree that he seems pretty weak for "the strongest singularity ever".
First, as you mention, his character is lacking in so many ways.
And second, the problem is how every single enemy he has now is a god with physics-defying powers, if not straight-up reality warping abilities. "God's Domain" basically allows his opponents to control an aspect of reality to a level that makes even lightspeed attacks irrelevant, and they can't even be killed conclusively but only sent back to their native plane of existence.

In light of this, he might or might not be "the strongest singularity ever" in terms of raw power... but if "the singularity" is supposed to fight gods, he's the greatest failure ever as a singularity. Except against that one god who wanted to enjoy a sword fight because that's his character, he is simply not playing on the same field. And this makes this whole "singularity" concept totally stupid.

This is a case where the words of the characters simply do not match the facts of the manga. Everyone is impressed by him and his strength, even though he's totally useless. His only salvation so far was his sister who hosts a divine power of her own, and this barely evens the playing field. It's inconsistent and it's getting boring.

(note: I don't mind that the MC is not invincible god-slayer on his own. I'm just tired of the disjunction between what he can do and what the other characters are saying about him. I feel like I'm not reading the same story they are talking about.)

Basically, if I rewrite the story a little, this is how it sounds to me, without the magical story components.

MC is sent to an isolated training camp so he can prepare to fight some threat to humanity.
He comes back, strong enough to kill an elephant in one punch.
Exposition dude then tells him to go fight the threat to humanity.
Threat to humanity is the black plague.
And there are doctors around with stocks of antibiotics, but they ask him to go punch the plague first, just for the lulz.

Sad end to Mimimimi, she does deserve a win but this feels like it was just an illusion and not what his life was like...but I could be wrong. To some other people's points, I see him having the "potential" of being the strongest because he technically got put in the past and is able to train himself and others to get better control over their magical abilities/weapons. While no one actually knows he came from the future, his ability to train others is probably highly valuable and understated. His childhood friend basically was given an OP weapon that could kill her and forced to use it, but he was able to circumvent that by teaching her.

Yea I agree with you there, the enemies he fights have powers that are all reality warping. But what makes this a bit annoying is that the story starts off with how he killed the demon lord and all the demon gods, which kind of makes you question what the hell makes a demon god different from the gods he has been fighting throughout there series. This is especially a problem since they basically said that the world he was in before is supposed to be a tutorial or something so like did it never have gods with reality warping abilities or something. Because if not that doesn't make the world a good tutorial at all
