To extend on that, JP online slang for "lol" is "草" which is grass if translated directly but its used interchangably with "wwwwww" which looks like grass so they shorten it by using the kanji for it. Both "wwww" and "草" is used in online chat.

As for "wwww", "W" is two hands covering the mouth while laughing "fufufu" so upper arms and hands make the W shape (kinda)
