I don't have any chemistry degree and I could make it. Once you know the 3 main ingredients it only takes some experimentation to get the proportions as well as some refining to get good enough purity. There are several ways to obtain potassium nitrate. The easiest would probably be from bat guano otherwise you could get it from fertilizer or use the nitre process which is made mostly from urea. This process can be a little complicated because if you do it wrong it could set you back years or you will produce much less.

Well it is easy to do it if you have ever seen it done where you just get some cloth in a pot, put the nitrogen rich soil in a layer, then put a layer of wood ash, repeat the soil layer, then the ash layer a few more times, and then cover the whole thing in straw. Then pour boiling water over it and collect the liquid at the bottom of the pot through a spigot or something then boil this water to evaporate it.

Your problem is just that he does not explain what he will do in 5 or 10 years if he were king.
