I thought he used his stealth skills to get back in, until the knight showed up and he was let out the gate, nixing that theory. It was weird.

Though I don't have the highest opinion of the princess and the country because of how they kidnap random people to fight in their wars, and are clearly trying to control them - the princess did seem hesitant to let the MC go on his own, for his own sake and safety, so it shows that they're not totally heartless or cruel in regards to the isekai'd people.

Yeah, there probably could have been another chapter of the captain getting along with them, though it did at least somewhat show he didn't exactly agree with the princess in the last one. Maybe they didn't feel there was enough to pad out alongside that.
