Manga as a whole seems to really underestimate Craftsmen. Making 136 pieces with the exact same specification is not that difficult for a moderately skilled Craftsman. Because it's literally their job that they've been doing their entire life.

Maybe it's snobbery? They're only mahjong pieces if they come from Mahjong region of the Forest of Death. Otherwise they're just sparkling game tokens.

If they're specified that then maybe but they specifically said that it'd be difficult for Craftsman to make 136 of the exact same thing. According to the author the difficulty is in the amount and precision. But the whole thing is that amount and precision are the main things that Craftsman do.

It does seem like at least the mountain elf girls would've figured out how to make a jig for a table saw by this point.

Humans have been able to make incredibly detailed and precise things for years without modern technology and in this world they have magic so they should be able to do even more than we used to be able to do. The main thing that modern technology does is save time. Anything that you can do with modern tools you can do with older tools but it would just take you a lot longer.

Even if there's enough skilled craftsmen to match the precision (136 pieces pet set and there's 20 sets ordered...) the material quality alone would make any noble want MC's mahjong pieces.

Made from forest of death tree, tougher than glorious nippon steel folded ten thousand times.

As I explained previously they didn't say anything about the materials they're made from. The only thing they talked about was the amount and the precision. If it was about the materials the author would have written that it was about the materials. But the author didn't write that it's about the materials. The author wrote that it was about the amount and the precision.

I am pretty sure Chinese craftsmen have been making mahjong pieces for centuries
Manga as a whole has a problem where they really look down on Craftsman's abilities and think that stuff is only possible with modern tools despite the fact humans have been making it for hundreds of years without power tools.

A few nobles want custom made pieces

I'd assume such custom pieces would include the material choice.

Heck the whole precision stuff might be the craftsmen's excuse to not admit they can't so much as work with forest of death's tree so any pieces they make would always have that implied inferiority compare to the sets made by MC.

I’m pretty sure that in the WN the Mahjong game was crafted with wood from the Forest of Death. While craftsmen can build sets with other woods, that one is simply too tough for their tools.
It’s still not a great explanation even in the Copper Age, filigree was being made at the level of tenths of a millimeter, provided the king paid enough

to be fair while it may author just downplay craftman, so many later world building seem to(unintentionally) imply the lasting war before VC appear really divert all the focus from art and craft work.
But i am pretty sure the main reason is the art on the pieces. VC likely instead of paint, just sculpt the picture and mark onto the wood itself, which i think carpenter without periord training of small minute detail-work for art craft, would be unable to do it.

Carpenters have been doing small minute detail work for hundreds of years without any need for magic tools or modern tools. I'm sure that a carpenter with magic tools would be able to do stuff on the level of a carpenter with modern tools.
