At the beginning he only wanted to push away bad women from Kenji (him being super naive and all that), but at some point his scumbag nature took control and just fucked his bestfriend's crush just because he could, deluding himself with "for Kenji's sake" all the time.

If you mean the original NTR, it's a flimsy excuse to let the author fulfill the premise.

On paper, he thinks the hero is too naïve to recognize that he's getting played and used by the people around him, so he's "eliminating" the threat beforehand, so to speak.

It's just that Sexy Demon Priest Girl was too much for him, and he actually fell in love. Not knowing what to do with those feelings, he was almost relieved when Kenji caught him, and wanted to be the bad guy to make Kenji go home. You can see how that turned out.
