Was explained that the clothing was cleaned because it separated out the dirt and bodily fluids from the clothing, which returned it to a "like new" appearance. However I don't remember it being said it repaired damage.

I mean he could just break down the materials and recraft the items, but that seems more of an intentional use of skill rather then an automatic function of his inventory.
Whether it's splintered or whole, it's just a unit of "wood" in his inventory, just like in a videogame. Many videogames let you craft something out of wood, like a place able wall or floor plank, and you can then convert them back to raw wood with no loss of materials.

But that would be an active use of hos skill, rather then an automatic function of his inventory.

It does get explicitly explained later, but his ability can't just repair things for free. If the area is permanently damaged by destruction of material, it can't be repaired. They give the example of the uniforms being scorched. Wood depends on the quality and material of the lumber involved. If the area is absolutely damaged to degrade the structure, it would require new material to fix.

It does get tricky though, and either way it is generally a non-issue for most things since he keeps a plethora of excess materials on hand.

O . o
Which again sounds like a conscious use of his skill with intent to repair a damaged item, thrue the use of additional materials.

Meaning placing damaged items in his inventory don't automagiclly repair them. Cleaned yes, but not restored without intent and materials.

Which brings up an interesting side question. If he was to pickup a car, would it only clean out the rubbish and dirt from the interior, or would he also have to top up the fuel and motor oil before each use?

He could add fuel/oil to the car because it counts as a container for those items, and it would detail clean it every time. It should clean out impurities in the oil, and fuel, if they exist, and separate them in inventory. Not that he'd ever take the car, considering how busted Shoko's ability is. Just like how a clothing are individual items, and he stores them whole, they aren't broken down to constituent materials and reassembled on recall. Or if they are, they don't appear so in his inventory.

We know the water containers get separated when sent to inventory, but he also can summon the water in another container later on use.

Some small notes about his ability:
It can keep things in time stasis, but it can also age things. This comes up with making vinegar. He can also make glass later (it isn't just sand, btw), so he can 'smelt' things, but he can't heat up food in inventory. Cooking is not crafting. There is a limit on spawn distance, but it is a pretty decent distance. He can chemically mix things as well, so if he understood the makeup of gasoline and found the base materials, he could synthesize it.

There is some other stuff, like how the mages do learn new spells overtime, or how repeated uses seem to improve abilities in general. But I expect most of that to be in the next dozen chapters or so.

The manga is currently weekly releases on Wednesday, so it should be in the next 6 months to get to Day 5.

Well if it's just splinters, I think the plank or block of wood, would get refreshed to be as good as new, and even if there was actual damage to the materials, I think he still gets the equivalent amount of good wood added to his inventory when he scraps something.
So, like if you take four branches of wood out of inventory to make a campfire, and it burns through a quarter of it, then he's just missing the one branch, instead of each branch being a bit burned.
This is him actively scrapping the thing, not just being fixed by his inventory.
