My main problem with the alterations is the same as those who are complaining about Asuta passiveness. He didn't confront the trader and he didn't attempt to rescue the little girl. Both of those actions made him feel much more assertive than he did in this version where he did nothing about both issues.

Yup. The mangaka just doesn’t get it. Asuta’s supposed to be this scrawny manlet, but his stubbornness and boldness is supposed to intimidate even the hunters... they cut the emotional speeches too, so what’s the point? This isn’t Shingeki no Soma or something where people eat food then gasm over it. This is about the people eating the food.

QFT. Part of the problem is that there is a precedent for the structures and subject matter of food manga. The expectation for food manga is to focus on the preparation of food and the presentation of ingredients. This adaptation is trying to force a deeper story about "social and economic relationships as understood through food and daily living practices", into a mold for stories about "technical cooking skills and recipe learning", based on superficial similarity. Basically trying to jam a square peg into a round hole. It almost seems like the artist and manga editor hadn't read the source novels.
