I'm guessing Arthur was either seeking a glorious death like our adorable murder muffin Ginko, or he was seeking glorious battle like an ORK from 40k, hence his line at the end about the other adventurers turned heroes being the real "heroes" because they all took up the mantle of hero for the people, they assumed he had but he never said it, or at least the story didn't have him say it.
