The lot number on the grenade implies it is from before MIL-STD-1168A, which came into being in '75 : the format used for this grenade was in use from '65 to '75, making this grenade somewhere between 51 and 61 years old at time of writing. The more relevant information is stamped on the top of the safety lever, but here it's thoroughly unreadable. PB is Pine Bluff Arsenal's manufacturer code, 22 would be the "Interfix Number" (which batch it's from) and 119A would be the "Lot Sequence Number", 'A' indicating a rework.
Notably, the M18 is a colored smoke grenade. As in, signalling smoke. Breathing in that stuff is obviously ill-advised (well, the older ones, mostly, since they used sulfur and sodium bicarbonate alongside the potassium chlorate; the newer ones replaced the former two with magnesium carbonate and sugar, which reduces toxicity, but still, breathing in smoke of any kind is never a good idea), but this smoke is meant to rise out of the canister to signal to other units at a distance, not linger and choke anyone caught in it, like, say, tear gas. Sure, the smoke is thick and could be used to obscure visibility, but it comes out in a fairly straight jet and doesn't really cloud up on the ground, where such a tactic would actually be effective; stepping out of the smoke would be rather simple and this whole bit would only buy a few seconds. The most useful part of this was probably Daisuke chucking it straight at the dude's head to prevent him from firing straight away, which, uh, could've been accomplished with your run-of-the-mill stone (the M18 weighs 19oz, or a little over half a kilo).
TL;DR : Daisuke probably could've just chucked rocks at the guys' heads and have accomplished about as much without spending 100 bucks per projectile. The dust Ashley kicked up summoning that bird would've been a better way of obscuring vision had it lingered a little longer.
Unrelated, but damn, their weaponry's all over the place. P.08, they draw swords and charge, p.16, they materialize bows and arrows out of nowhere and pelt the golem, p.18, the swords are back and the bows are gone, p.20, the swords transform into bows and arrows within the same page. None of them are seen carrying a quiver at any point. Hyperspace arsenal?
