It's starting to look like the author haphazardly made the MC too powerful and is now facing a big problem of creating believable challenges for him. So, he makes the MC act irrationally instead. He could have kicked the villain's ass all the way to Paris, no problem, but instead he left behind a weaker ally and is running.
