Or maybe he's so traumatised he'd rather stay as a beggar doing odd jobs and ignoring reality than trying to recover the kingdom. Could go either way.

So this dude sends his whole army to save another nation's village, gets his military completely obliterated in the process, doesn't even manage to defend the location, then loses his own capital to a neighboring country?

Maybe the demons are ridiculously strong, or elves in this world are made of soggy paper and glitter, but this level of incompetence deserves the guillotine at the very least. France certainly beheaded monarchs for less.

I feel it's the latter. Per the dream sequence, he was traumatize that his decisions resulted in getting all his men killed and his city destroyed that he feels that he's a failure and not a good fit for the role and responsibility that was thrusted upon him.

Reminder that he got put into that position by the people purely because of his lineage, and even in his dying moment the captain priority was telling Gid to survive.
