I think that generally rubbing your thumb and index finger together like that refers to money. But his reaction seems to indicate it is something else. Since there is some distance between the fingers and they are not actually rubbing, it might mean "short"/"small"/"tiny", but I have no idea how that is supposed to be used as a verb... Nor why it would be considered bad by mc.

What's hilarious about it is the most distinctive feature of Asians is not hair but their mono eyeild, it makes your eyes look small and in some cases slanted. It's the main reason why ignorant people think that anime and manga characters are white since the eyes look 'normal'. There is a surgery that is popular in asia but south korea in particular called a 'double eyelid surgery'. The results can sometimes be quite surprising.

So to me the black hair trope just comes across as being hilarious oblvious to the rest of the world around them. "what's different between us and european people?" "uuuhhh...they have...blond hair?".

Well, following the typical tropes, an adventurer/hunter/parent will show up deus ex machina style and will save the children.
Alternatively the MC somehow gains more power....but I highly doubt it since this doesn't seem to be that kind of manga.

I read this chapter, then afterwards, back at the title page, looked at the cover. "wait, that's the fire mage? she had blue hair?!"
