@Kshatria mines are surprisingly hard to make and make reliable. Greek fire is easier to control at least. Mines also would have stopped the cavalry charge from taking out the magicians that were fleeing. He COULD have used triggered explosives, but then he'd have made a mess of the trench system he made.
The close range terror weapon of the flamethrowers broke their ranks, and then cavalry came out to sweep the rout and target the enemy magicians. A masterful stroke. Not one that you can pull off regularly.
I feel the MC blew his load too fast on the modern day tech because that kind of stuff is gonna get countered hard really fast, especialy when you already have magic that's basicaly WW2 artillery at disposition.
