This is classic case, this could've been solved by simply fucking opening your mouth and saying your intention. Not showboating and doing a duel and pissing everyone off to state your intention in a roundabout way.

He could've just stated he came here as a patient when they met outside the pharmacy. But nooo.. dude is too above for such shit.
your forgetting that he was trying to avoid letting his family know, declaring it in public ruins that, so instead he told her in private

Indeed, this is not a point to be forgotten as it highlights his stupidity even more.
His family needs to know as he's the heir. His family needs to know as the father is the lead pharmacist in the empire.

He's so full of himself that he decided by himself that he was beyond knowledge and saving.
Even if the disease is unknown, this doesn't mean that there aren't ways to research it and find a cure.
In particular, he didn't know about his brother's skills until just now, but he should have known about the empress situation and how she got saved from a supposedly incurable disease. So, how does he not think that someone had skills beyond his own?
But that couldn't be the case because he, the high and mighty Palle, couldn't think of a solution, so nobody else could.
So, he's going to kill himself (cause of death: arrogance), and keep his family in the dark so they can't prepare for his upcoming demise. And certainly not try to save him.

but hes been doing massive amounts of research to try and figure it out?

gee i wonder if maybe thats EXACTLY WHY HES HERE IN THE FIRST PLACE!

hes literally here trying to find something to cure himself, he doesnt think itll work but hes still trying to find someone better then him to help

@T-sama He doesn't need to know they're sick. But knowing symptoms helps to lower how many diseases he has to search through to figure out what they have. So you go from let's say hundreds of thousands to just hundreds of possibilities. And then you have to manually go through each illness one by one. For a Single person. And what if you miss a disease? And he has to do that everyday. That would drive people insane.

@Wyrm He basically goes to the best Medical College on the planet, and none of the medical literature even mentions any of the symptoms he has. If they don't have it, other colleges aren't going to have it either. And if none of the literature can identify what he has, he also has no options in terms of treatments. He's not looking for a needle in a haystack. He's looking for a needle in a haystack the size of a country. He's trying his best, based on his limited options.

Nothing indicates that he knows that this pharmacy has anything to do with the empress being cured. Just check what happens when he learns that Pharma is the head of the pharmacy.
It seems he just heard of a new pharmacy and thought it could be his last resort without any hint or real hope that it will be.

That still shows arrogance. Because even a new disease can be researched. Or someone else might have made related discoveries that haven't been published yet. And he does so assuming that his ability to do research on his own disease is not hampered by bias or despair.

The empress herself was cured based on such a treatment that was not published yet, so there is precedent.
Same with the plague outbreak a while later.

To continue your poor analogy, he's looking for a needle in a country-wide haystack, by hand. When his brother has a metal detector. Which he doesn't know about because he decided not to ask anyone for help in looking for his needle.

(Edit: and his reason for keeping it secret is basically "I wanted to surprise everyone with my death". Which compounds the idiocy.)

You know a man can talk in normal voice in public without letting everyone know/overhear right. Telling her in private is not equal to duelling it out and then telling the truth after you're questioned.
