Not his first try, though do think it's his second. Rent succeeded where he failed on his first attempt.

As an aside, in manga time is rather subjective. He could have been at it for 20 seconds or 20 minutes. Rent also filled a thousand or so gallon tub with a five-ish gallon bucke in the time it took the MC to get the fire going.
